Investing in Oil Stocks, Oil ETFs and Oil Mutual Funds   by Investment Sage

“Formula for success: rise early, work hard, strike oil.” – J. Paul Getty

While the first two parts of this formula can be achieved by anyone with a dedicated work ethic, unless you are part of the Clampett family where a lucky shot finds a gushing well, the third part is where the challenge lies. J. Paul Getty obviously simplified his accomplishments with this statement but what can not be lost is the significance of Oil and its importance to any investor’s future success.

Growth in the demand for oil still threatens to outstrip growth in supply and there is money to be made. Investing in wells is not for everyone but investing in oil is. The Financial Markets provide investors a myriad of options to participate in this market including futures, stocks, oilfield services stocks to Oil ETFs and Oil Mutual Funds.

Large Oil Company Stocks

Large Oil Companies are amongst the largest companies in the world, with four (Exxon Mobil, PetroChina, Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron) ranking in the top ten according to the Finance Times Global 500. These companies have been producing profits in the tens of billions of dollars annual and have enormous petroleum reserves.

Small Oil Company Stocks

Small Oil Company stocks are usually more involved in exploration and production and whose market capitalization is between $250 million to $3 billion. These stocks usually sink or swim based on their exploration results which determines the amount of reserves they can bring to production. These stocks of these companies are more volatile and will react more to price fluctuations in the price per barrel. You should use due diligence before investing in some of the smaller oil companies paying special attention to the Management of the company to see if they have the necessary experience.

Oilfield Service Company Stocks

Oilfield Service Companies provide assistance to the Companies that conduct exploration and actually produce oil. They manufacture, repair and maintain equipment used in oil extraction and transport and assist the drilling companies in setting up wells but in general these companies do not produce oil or conduct exploration.

Oil ETFs and Oil Mutual Funds

Instead of buying individual stocks or futures, ETFs and Mutual Funds enable the average investor to participate in the price per barrel of oil like never before. You can purchase an ETF like USO (United States Oil Fund). It is widely traded and can be purchased through any brokerage account. Like a traditional stock its price fluctuates intra-day and can be purchased or sold at any time throughout the trading day. ETFs like USO can usually also be sold short to enable you to participate in any downward trend in prices or as a hedge to existing holdings. There are also numerous Inverse Oil ETFs which mimic a Short position to enable you to profit on a downward movement in Oil.

Much like ETFs, Mutual Funds like the ProFunds UltraSector Oil & Gas Investor (ENPIX) enable investors to participate in the price per barrel of oil without actually buying the commodity. Mutual Funds differ from ETFs in that they only price once a day after the close. Mutual Funds usually allow for systematic monthly investments for fixed dollar amounts so you can accumulate a position over time.

As a commodity, oils is part of the Energy Industry, one of the largest in the world. Every diversified portfolio should have some exposure to the Energy Industry and some to Oil specifically. The price per barrel affects every facet of our lives from the cost of groceries to the price of airline tickets. For the latest news on stocks, etfs and mutual funds in the Oil and Energy industries visit http://www.oilandenergy.net and http://www.investorpoint.com. Of course as with all investment decisions you should conduct thorough due dilligence prior to making any investment. It is important to note that the companies and securities mentioned here are solely for reference purposes only and do not constitute a recommendation to buy or sell.

Exotic Options Trading

Exotic Options Trading

$90

Written by an experienced trader and consultant, Frans de Weert’s Exotic Options Trading offers a risk-focused approach to the pricing of exotic options. By giving readers the necessary tools to understand exotic options, this book serves as a manual to equip the reader with the skills to price and risk manage the most common and the most complex exotic options. De Weert begins by explaining the risks associated with trading an exotic option before dissecting these risks through a detailed analysis of the actual economics and Greeks rather than solely stating the mathematical formulae. The book limits the use of mathematics to explain exotic options from an economic and risk perspective by means of real life examples leading to a practical interpretation of the mathematical pricing formulae. The book covers conventional options, digital options, barrier options, cliquets, quanto options, outperformance options and variance swaps, and explains difficult concepts in simple terms, with a practical approach that gives the reader a full understanding of every aspect of each exotic option. The book also discusses structured notes with exotic options embedded in them, such as reverse convertibles, callable and puttable reverse convertibles and autocallables and shows the rationale behind these structures and their associated risks. For each exotic option, the author makes clear why there is an investor demand; explains where the risks lie and how this affects the actual pricing; shows how best to hedge any vega or gamma exposure embedded in the exotic option and discusses the skew exposure. By explaining the practical implications for every exotic option and how it affects the price, in addition to the necessary mathematical derivations and tools for pricing exotic options, Exotic Options Trading removes the mystique surrounding exotic options in order to give the reader a full understanding of every aspect of each exotic option, creating a useable tool for dealing with exotic options in practice. “ Although exotic options are not a new subject in finance, the coverage traditionally afforded by many texts is either too high level or overly mathematical. De Weert’s exceptional text fills this gap superbly. It is a rigorous treatment of a number of exotic structures and includes numerous examples to clearly illustrate the principles. What makes this book unique is that it manages to strike a fantastic balance between the theory and actual trading practice. Although it may be something of an overused phrase to describe this book as compulsory reading, I can assure any reader they will not be disappointed. ”. —Neil Schofield, Training Consultant and author of Commodity Derivatives: Markets and Applications. “Exotic Options Trading does an excellent job in providing a succinct and exhaustive overview of exotic options. The real edge of this book is that it explains exotic options from a risk and economical perspective and

“Learn and profit from Jeff Augen’s book: It clearly explains how to take advantage of market inefficiencies in collapsing implied volatility, effects of strike price, and time decay. A must-read for individuals who are options oriented.” –Ralph J. Acampora, CMT, Director of Technical Analysis Studies, New York Institute of Finance   “A fantastic, insightful book full of meticulously compiled statistics about anomalies that surround option expiration. Not only does Augen present a set of effective trading strategies to capitalize on these anomalies, he walks through the performance of each across several expirations. His advice is practical and readily applicable: He outlines common pitfalls, gives guidance on timing your executions, and even includes code that can be used to perform the same calculations he does in the text. A thoroughly enjoyable read that will give you a true edge in your option trading.” –Alexis Goldstein, Vice President, Equity Derivatives Business Analyst   “Mr. Augen makes a careful and systematic study of option prices at expiration. His translation of price behavior into trading strategy is intriguing work, and the level of detail is impressive.” –Dr. Robert Jennings, Professor of Finance, Indiana University Kelly School of Business   “This book fills a gap in the vast amount of literature on derivatives trading and stands out for being extremely well written, clear, concise, and very low on jargon–perfect for traders looking to evolve their equity option strategies.” –Nazzaro Angelini, Principal, Spearpoint Capital   “Instead of considering macro-time strategies that take weeks to unfold, Jeff Augen is thinking micro here–hours or days–specifically the days or hours right before expiration, and harnessing grinding, remorseless options decay for profit. He builds a compelling case for the strategy here. The concept of using ratio spreads plus risk management for as brief a period as one day–open to close–to capture expiring premium is worth the price of admission alone. A superb follow-up to his first book. Must-read for the serious options student.” –John A. Sarkett, Option Wizard software   Equity and index options expire on the third Friday of each month. As that moment approaches, unusual market forces create option price distortions, rarely understood by most investors. These distortions give rise to outstanding trading opportunities with enormous profit potential. In doing so, he reveals insights beneficial even for the longer-term option trader. Specifically, Chapter 3 on trading volatility distortions introduces the idea of 3-D implied volatility surfaces. I wholly recommend this book.” –Steve Lentz, DiscoverOptions     Minimize Your Exposure to Market Risk and Increase Profits by Trading in Very Brief Time Frames   In today’s turbulent markets, traditional trading strategies have failed to provide protection from the rapid and violent changes that have swung the Dow down 330 points one day, up 280 points the next, and down 250 points at the open on the next. Fundamental analysis based on company performance and financial predictions has proven meaningless. Technical traders must now compete with institutional trading programs utilizing supercomputers that analyze and execute trades in millisecond time frames. So, how can a private investor compete in this environment?   In Day Trading Options , expert option trader Jeff Augen shows you how to continue to profit even in these chaotic times. You’ll learn to structure short-term trades that exploit well characterized price distortions and anomalies.
